SCMC 09 Round 3 Amazing Race!

SCMC’s Amazing Race organized by the Events Team was a tiring event for most of the participants, but we sure did have fun. Road Blocks, Sudoku, puzzles, quizzes and not to mention covering long distances to get to the challenges wasn’t an easy task. The participants had to crack their brains as well as flex some muscles or lack thereof to complete the given tasks. Failing to complete means they will have to be forfeited with time penalties. The participants also needed to go to almost all the places in the campus to complete the challenges. Thank you to the organizing team for getting the event to run smoothly. And of course congratulations to the winning team of Hafiz, Chang Long, Nadzirah and Serena who completed the race in ultra fast speed as they breezed through every challenge. On 7th October, we had our monthly SCMC birthday celebration on Wednesday. The birthday boy and girls were Xing Han, Michelle and Eileen. Ms Chee, Mr Ong and Mr Fong came down to celebrate the event; SCMC students from the previous rounds were also present. The cake was wonderful and everyone enjoyed the time there with a little catch up.

SCMC Round 3 Body Watch Session

On the 2nd of October, SCMC had a Bodywatch session with the students from Sports & Wellness Management. The 2 hour session was held from 3pm to 5pm at the school gym. We learnt about the proper usage for each individual gym equipment and machine. In total, there were about 15 different types of equipments.

The purpose of this event is to bond the class, and through the games that we played to know each other better. We were broken into 2 groups for the tour of the gym and took turns to try out various machines and we all had fun.

2 visitors from Motorola & 2 visitors from Infor came over to visit SCMC. They enquired about Cheers Project; Andrew managed to answer the queries well. They suggested using RFID and using it together with the WMS system. By reducing manual work it will increase accuracy and efficiency. The time saved by using automated system will be better than using manual cycle count. They encouraged the Cheers team to visit Motorola’s website for case study solutions. The 4 visitors provided valuable insights from industry professionals’ point of view and provided us with advice and solutions.

TEP Tele-Match

Yesterday, SCMC send out 10 participants to participate in the Tele-Match. The match was held at the sports hall and all nine tep stopovers send out their members for the competition. At 1.30pm, the participants in their sportswear were to report to the sports hall to get ready and warm up for the competition.

The leader of our team is Xing Han; he is in charge of giving instructions and motivating us during the course of the competition. After 3 rounds of tough competition with the other 8 tep teams, we manage to secure 14points, just 1points short of entering the semi-final. The team was disappointed as all of them put in their best during the competition.

In overall, even though we never make it into the semi-final, but through this competition, we found out each member’s strength and weaknesses and our teamwork and bond had further strengthened.

The Team consist of: Xing Han, Ben, Erskine, Hong Tat, Hafiz, Gina, Eileen, Nadzirah, En nian & Dara.

Yesterday, on the 23rd of September, We had a birthday celebration for all our September babies!! Some of the staff from round 1 managed to join us for the celebration. Our September babies are Erskine and Hafiz. Mr Fong was also there to celebrate this joyous moment with us.

Yakult Factory Visit

On 22nd Sept, SCMC went to the one and only Yakult factory located at Senoko; everyone was excited about this fieldtrip. For some of us, it is the first time that we visited a factory or manufacturing area. The person who was conducting the tour was a Microbiologist with over 20 years of experience under his belt. He still managed to answer our queries regarding Supply Chain due to his vast experience with Yakult.

We were ushered to the classroom that they have especially for visitors to the factory. We were greeted with a bottle of Yakult and 2 handouts. He started off by giving us more insights on the running of the Yakult factory in Singapore. It was followed by a multimedia presentation on Yakult. He then explained with a flowchart the process required for the making of Yakult.

We were then given a tour around the factory to take a closer look at the processes that were required to prepare the Yakult drinks before it reaches us as consumers. All in all it was an eye-opening experience for all of us.

Yesterday, 22nd September 2009, SCMC went out of the centre for a Bonding lunch session at North point. We all had our lunch at Korean BBQ Chicken restaurant. It was probably the first time that we all had a meal together sharing. This certainly had allowed us to get to know each other better. The lunch was awesome, the company even better, what an awesome bonding session that was.

This visit’s main objective is to help him understand what we do in SCM centre, and the things we learn throughout this whole attachment.

Visit to Shanghai

Recently, our SCMC students are given an opportunity to go Shanghai for a study tour. They get to visit some of the big companies like DHL-Sinotrans Shanghai, Infor Global Solutions, Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Parkson Retail Group and Tong Ji University. They are able to get an insight on some logistics companies and also a China University.

Ivy & Ally

The First stop of the visit is the DHL Company in Shanghai. The vice-president of the company had shared with them the company’s background and also his experience and knowledge regarding supply chain management. Our students also get to visit the DHL warehouse and see how it is being managed and functioned.

Secondly, our students visited Infor Company. Infor’s manager and senior consultant had shared with them the background of the company and also the uniqueness of the Infor WMS.

Here our students get to present to them on what we do in SCMC and also how we implement our projects using of Infor WMS.

Thirdly, they also visited the Alcatel Shanghai Bell Company whereby they get to visit the company’s warehouses and experience how different company manages their warehouses.

Fourthly, they also got to visit the Parkson Retail Group and understand more about the company and how it functions.

Lastly, they got to visit the Tong Ji University.

Overall, the overseas study tour is very enriching and educational. They not only were given the chance to visit and understand how big logistic and supply chain management company functions but also able to experience the different cultures.

On Monday, 7 Sep 2009, we had visitors from the GuangXi Province of China visting our centre to learn more on our centre's operations. Our two presenters, Ben and Qing Ling gave a presentation in Chinese so that they can better understand what the students in SCMC do.This time round, we give the visitors a tour and thorough explanation of our scmc blog, we showed them our current staff and introduce the various team leader of different project group. Supply Chain Certificate Graduation Ceremony

This event was held to congratulate the participants of Certificate of Supply Chain Management which was attended by Logistics Officers from various units of the Army. About 20 of the graduates attended the ceremony which was held at LTD 2 on Wednesday morning to receive their certificates.

The participants were seated as they waited for the arrival of the Guest of Honour (GOH), Colonel Peter Tay, Commander Army Logistics Training Institute. Upon the arrival of Colonel Tay, the emcee greeted the distinguished guests; among them was our Director of School Business Management, Mr K K Chiang, before proceeding with the event.

After which, a multimedia presentation of the 2 month long course was played. The presentation includes pictures from the various training sessions, fieldtrip, project presentations as well as assessments which the participants had undergone.

Mr K K Chiang then gave a short speech to congratulate the graduates from the course. It was followed by another speech by Colonel Tay who thanked NYP School of Business Management for facilitating the course. The participants of the course then went on to receive their certificates which was handed out by Colonel Tay.

Thereafter, they were all invited to a reception outside the Lecture Theatre. Students from the Supply Chain Management Centre mingled with the participants who were more than happy to share their experiences. Overall, it was a good experience for the SCMC students to learn from the Logistics Officers of the Army on the course that they have attended as well as real life application of Supply Chain Management.

The SCM Day team is headed by Gina Chua and the team members are Nadzirah, Qing Ling, Dara and Eileen. Gina presented to Mr Fong and Mr Ong the overall process that the team will be doing for the whole of 9 weeks in SCMC. Their main objective is to get as many Year 1 students as possible to choose SCM as their first choice option for the Specialization that they need to take for Business Management students.

They presented using an excel sheet with the timeline of the whole process. Mr Ong posed an interesting question to the team members when he asked, "If the SCM day will be too boring for the students, what other ways can we use to get the students to choose SCM as the option."

The SCM Day team then went on to brainstorm for more innovative and interesting ways to grab the Year 1's students interest by placing themselves in the shoes of the Year 1 students.

Since we are all students ourselves and most of us chose SCM as our first choice. Do you guys have any suggestions as to how to attract people to choose SCm. Maybe we can ask ourselves, why did we choose SCM or what made us choose SCM as our first choice. Is it because you attended the SCM day? We are sure that Gina and her team will be able to achieve SCMC target which is to be the number 1 choice option for Year 1 Business Management students to choose.

Inventory Management

On Friday we also have another visitor from Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Sean Koh Sze Yong is a final year undergraduate from NTU. We have the Inventory Management team which is headed by Ee Xin Han and consists of Ben Lui Wei Nam, Ng Hong Tat and Erskine Saw Wei Kit to assist him in his project which encompasses the processes of a Handphone Repair Center as well as how they manage their inventory.

The Inventory Team presented to Sean their findings and some background research that they did prior to embarking on the project together with him. Upon concluding the presentation, they then sat together to discuss more elaborately on the project that they will be undertaking. Despite the short notice that the Inventory Management Team had, they did pretty well to grasp some of the knowledge required for the project. Good job guys.

2 students from the pioneer batch of Supply Chain Management Center, Ally Seah Ming Xuan, Ivy Tay Zhu Hui. They will be going on a Study Trip to Shanghai, China and they will be accompanied by Mr Ong. As part of their preparation for the trip, they rehearsed the PowerPoint slides that they will be presenting to the INFOR staff in Shanghai. They explained what the current projects that the SCMC are handling at the moment as well as how they utilized the INFOR Warehouse Management System during their TEP.

The two round 1 students then also shared some of their TEP experiences with the current batch. It was a well prepared presentation and we wish them all the best for their presentation during the study trip and that they have fun during the visit.

Interview with SCMC T-Shirt Designer Part 2

As the SCMC T-shirt is the combined efforts of two talented designers, we've interviewed Sze Min, the co-designer of the SCMC t-shirt.

Q: What inspire you to use the design for the shirt?

A: I was inspired by Singapore National Service and Singapore Airlines to create the logo.

Q: How did you feel when designing the t-shirt?

A: I felt that when I’m designing the t-shirt, I aim to allow SCMC students to be visualised by other students or outsiders that SCMC students have great potential of leadership skills and knowledge, confident, outstanding, everyone is unique and to soar above all.

Q: How do you feel having your design used for the shirt?
I was totally excited and happy when my design is used. I am grateful to the judges for their appreciation in my design.

A: For what I had achieved most was the wonderful experience I had earned to promote and present my t-shirt design in front of the judges and staffs. I also had a great opportunity to meet the school of business’s director to present my design and receive good feedback from him which was encouraging.

Q: Anything you want to tell the future students about the t-shirt?

A: The t-shirt brings an important message to all supply chain students that everyone is different and unique with their own strengths, just like the bar code. Have a great spirit of leadership and teamwork to conquer every obstacle.

Interview with SCMC T-Shirt Designer

We've interviewed Hidayah, the designer of the SCM T-shirt to talk about what exactly inspired her unique design for the T-shirt and how she felt about her design being chosen

Q: What inspire you to use the design for the shirt?

A: My design keeps in mind the meaning of global and strength as I believe that these factors represent Supply Chain Management (SCM). Therefore, I would like to convey this message through my design. Thus, I’m inspired to use the design for the T-shirt.

Q:How did you feel when designing the t-shirt?

A: Certainly, I was hopeful and motivated. I was hoping it would get chosen. I had done it with pride from planning to research to designing it out. I held high expectation on myself. I would like to see my design to be worn by every SCM students.

Q: How do you feel having your design used for the shirt?

A: Well, actually the finalised design is a combination of my peers’, Mr Fong’s and me. I have done that because I would like them to feel that they’re also part of the design. Of course, I have enhanced their ideas to fit into mine. Thus, I would prefer calling it “our design” rather than “my design” . Having our design used for the shirt, was unexpected. Nonetheless, I’m impressed and proud of it.

Q: Anything you want to tell the future students about the t-shirt? (example i hope you all will feel proud wearing it)

A: I hope you all will stand tall when wearing it. Not just that, I would like all of you to understand the meaning behind the elements of the design. Be proud of it. Lastly, just remember “We make it global!”

Results for Fedex Competition

On last Saturday, the Fedex team went on to compete for the top three position. The team had worked hard and been through many rehearsals for the final presentation. However, the other finalists for the competition were also strong competitors with much experience on presentation skills. Our team did not get into the top three position but was good enough to clinch the top six position. Thank you for your hard work and commiment Hidayah and Pras.

Finally the long awaited event! The events team had organised for SCMC to visit the body gym as one of the field trips. When we arrived, we were welcomed by the gym instructors who greeted us passionately and brought us around the gym, introducing the usage of the gym equipments. We are glad to welcome vistors from Hubei University of Technology to visit SCMC today!Two different groups of vistors visited SCMC to know more about how we operate and stimulate a real working environment for our students. The visitors had shown great enthusiasm during the whole introduction.

With Mr Fong to start with the welcome speech, followed by our president and vice-president presenting on the method of operation. After that, the group of visitors was split up into smaller groups so that they can go around the room and know more about the different system operations.

Results for logo design competition

The result for the logo competition is out! The first prize goes to Lay Kheng. The second prize goes to Yoke Hong and lastly, the third prize goes to Qiong ling. Congratulations! The three winners will combine each of their strong points and come up with a logo for SCMC.

Good news for all! The team consisting of Hidayah and Pras has got into the top six psoition in the Fedex competition. Congratulations and well done!! They will continue to compete for the top three position this saturday with a chance to represent Singapore in the international Fedex competition that will be held in Bangkok.

The logo design competition has finally ended! We are honoured to have Miss Chee, Mr Ong, Mr Ng and Mr Fong to be the judges for this competition. Everyone had worked hard for this logo competition!!! Thank you! The logo selected will become a representation of SCMC and will be used on future documents. Stay tune to know about the final chosen logo!

Finally after four days, the new batch of SCMC has a new event going on! On 26/6, we are to present our findings on Purchase Order.

On 29/6, our students were to share about what they knew on the concept of shipment order and warehouse management system (WMS). Everyone was well-prepared and enthusiastic about the presentation.

Body Watch Session

SCMC Members visited the NYP gym last Friday, 22 May.

The main purpose of this event was to bond all of us even closer.

Students from Sports and Wellness Management, had lined up interesting programs for us.

Firstly, we had an aerobics lesson with them, followed by a short tour around the gym, whereby we had them explain to us how some exercise equipments work. Lastly, we played the game human chain and also had other activities.

The whole session was indeed effective in bonding us together and we enjoyed it a lot. From this event, we have improved our communication skills with one another and also learnt to be cooperative. It was a truly beneficial program for our class!

Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Today, 18 May, we had a pleasant visit from students of Hong Kong Polytechnic University who came down to SCMC to see what we are learning here. Around 15-20 students flocked into our centre full of excitement, all ready to explore and to learn more about our style of study as we welcomed them heartily. It was a wonderful experience for both schools as we got to know each other better.

The visit started off with a presentation by Mr. Alan Fong, who shared and explained succinctly what SCMC is all about and how we can develop good working skills at TEP. Shortly after, the Project Managers of both Design and System Team were called upon to share what their group has accomplished for the past 5 weeks. The foreign students strolled around the centre and interacted with some of our members as they threw questions that we pondered about. They were also intrigued with what we were doing and the equiments provided by our school as one of them commented, "Alll we have back in Hong Kong are just boring lectures and tutorials as our school does not have the appropriate equiments required for such study."

After 20 minutes explaining and introducing the systems in TEP, the foreign students expressed their thanks and departed gratefully for their next stopover.

I'm sure that it was a mind opening and enriching experience for us as we got to know how privileged we are to be having TEP in Nanyang Polytechnic.

Project Presentation

The SCM Centre Members were being split into 2 teams, each having their own assigned project management to implement.

The Design Team is tasked to redesign the current storeroom in Nanyang Polytechnic into a more systematic manner. On the other hand, the System Team is assigned to use the Infor Warehouse Management System (WMS) which is a well-known software in supply chain, to work on their allocated project.

SCM's T-Shirt Design Competition was held on 30 April 2009.
Most of us did great during the presentation.
And our supervisors had a hard time selecting the best design.
