Are you curious about the process of
having a product delivered to the
consumer from scratch ? If that is the case then
SCMC is the right place for you !
Over at SCMC you can see how raw materials are transformed and delivered to the final consumer.
The SCM centre is a dynamic workplace where innovation is matched with creativity.
Students attached to the centre have a firsthand experience on how it would be like working in a supply chain field.
Students can look forward to planning out the layout of a warehouse and having the chance at using new and upcoming technologies in the supply chain world.
The centre also offers students the chance to go on learning fieldtrips
to help them better understand how a supply chain organization works. What’s more ? SCMC also combines fun with work,
with the saying "all work and no play makes jack a dull boy”.
Thus, SCM centre organizes
--> monthly birthday celebration
--> team bonding events
--> gatherings
--> and competitions
With all this, students would experience a
vibrant and interactive working environment
while learning at the same time.

SCMC Alumni 2009 - TEP Stopover Round 2 Staff Contacts
SCMC Top Students
Round 1
Guay Sze Min, System Team Project Manager
Her Learning Experiences
During my 9 weeks of training in SCMC, I was given an opportunity to be the project manager of the system team. Being the project manager was very challenging for me as I had to learn how to communicate with people, managing conflicts and to motivate my team members. On top of all these challenges, I had to plan, organise, develop, implement and lead in different work tasks.
I was honoured to be the “Staff of Week 1” and the “Winner of T-shirt Design Competition”. I also had the opportunity to participate in FedEx International Trade Competition during my stay in SCMC.
I am delighted to be the Top SCMC student for Round 1 2009, Semester 1 and I really missed my time in SCMC.
Round 2
Zhi Yong,Configuration In-Charge of Cheers System Team
His Learning Experiences
During my 9 weeks of training in SCMC, I’ve indeed gained lots of learning experiences like using the INFOR WMS and most importantly, TEAMWORK. I was being assigned to be the configuration in-charge of the system team for the CHEERS Project. This was indeed a very challenging role as I had to be familiarized with the system so that I could set up the system and to actually test it to ensure everything is running smoothly.
There are definitely some problems that I faced like dealing with the system errors as I’m new to the system and even when doing the stock count in CHEERS. That’s where I can say these problems could not be solved without the help of my supervisors and all my fellow colleagues.
I’m very happy to be the Top SCMC student for Round 2 2009 Semester 1 and lastly I would like to say Thank You to those who had voted me for being the Staff of Week3 and to those who had helped me during the 9 weeks of training.
Round 3 Projects (Current)
SCM Week Plan
The SCM Day team is currently working on the planning of SCM week where by the year 1 student will be introduce to Supply Chain Management (SCM). The objective of this SCM week is to attract students to know more about SCM and make SCM the first choice out of the 4 options provided for year 1 student.
During this 1 week event, the Supply Chain Management Centre will be open daily from 2:00p.m to 3:00p.m for interested students to visit. During their visit, videos about supply chain management will screen, a PowerPoint presentation about SCM and Q&A session for student who wish to know more about SCM to ask the Staff in the centre. Currently, the team is coming out with the videos and PowerPoint that will be screen during that week. The team is also working on the advertising of the week to create more awareness of the event.
-Gina Chua, SCM DAY Project Manager
Inventory Management Team
The Inventory Management Team is currently cooperating with a 3rd year NTU student with the project on hand, which is mainly about inventory management. The team is split into 2 devisions, consisting of the report and programming team. The programming team is taught to use arena(flowchart simulator software) to assist them in designing a flowchart for the project.
Whereas the report team will be in charge of research related to inventory management and compliation of the report.
-Xing Han, Inventory Management Team Project Manager
Cheers Team
The Cheers team is responsible for keep track with the expiry date of the products in MSC Cheers as the POS system is unable to keep track of them. Thus, the team has to make use of the INFOR Warehouse Management SYstem to keep track of the expiry dates.
As such, Cheers team requires a significant amount of manpower as well as time to handle their expiring products.
SCMC strongly believe that we are able to provide a more efficient and effective way to handle this issue. Therefore, the team is currently in the process of providing a well constructed solution to the problem.
-Hafiz, Cheers Team Project Manager
Portal Team
The portal team is tasked with the job of monitoring the SBM Assets and maintaining the SBM Assets website which is a list of the different assets the School of Business Management possesses.
For the convenience of the users of the website, the items where sorted into different categories. The Team were also given the task of looking into how we can better keep track of the various items.
The portal team also have to make trips down physically to the whole of SBM to do a physical count & record items that are previously not recorded. Photo will also be taken and Product codes will be created.
The portal team plans to use the INFOR Warehouse Management System to monitor the SBM assets more efficiently and reduce human errors.
-Nicholas, Portal Team Project Manager
Round 2 Projects
Cheers System & Operational Team
NYP Cheers has been faced with a pressing expiry date issue with their inventory, where their staff have to manually check their inventory daily for items that are about to expire. This Cheer project was initiated as the Supply Chain Management Centre believed they could improve on Cheers inventory management.
In this project the Supply Chain Management Centre would be collaborating with Cheers to improve their inventory management. With the implementation of INFOR Warehouse Management System into Cheers, a more systematic arrangement of their inventory will be established.
The ultimate goal of this project is to resolve the inventory expiry date issue in Cheers and improve their inventory management. Before implementing the Warehouse Management System into Cheers, the Operation team from the Supply Chain Management Centre would determine what items are available in Cheers. This would allow us to start off our implementation stage of our project by imputing the item codes into the Warehouse Management System, which would be the first step in resolving the expiry date issue.
While proceeding with the project, the teams would have to follow certain guidelines which would facilitate in the completion of the project. Such as defining the problem and figuring the cause of it before every step of the process. Following, the teams would have to conceive solutions for the problems.
The teams also interviewed the management from Cheers to further gather information that might assist the teams in the project. Finally the System Team would be able to generate a daily expiry date report for Cheers in which the Cheers Team would remove the expiring items from Cheers store.

Design Team's was assigned a project call "Warehouse Design".
There are 10 storerooms in the School of Business Management in NYP which is used to store all excess or spare items which include office equipment such as chairs, tables and computer monitors etc. However, the warehouse are being arranged with items strewn all over the place, which resulted in the blockage of the passageway. Therefore, the main aim of the project "Warehouse Design" is to redesign the storerooms in a more systematic and organized way, so that it would be efficient, less time-consuming and ensure the well-being of the user personnel when he/she wants to retrieve one of the items. -Prasiddha, Design Team Project Manager
By fulfilling my roles as a project manager is not sufficient for the whole project to be successful. The most important factor of a project is the teamwork between the team members.
System Team
System team’s task was to help Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) organise their assets and keep track of their purchases using software called Warehouse Management System (WMS).
With the help of this system, we aim to improve the school’s organisation of assets and purchases, to help school administrators reduce their time on data input, ensure higher efficiency of searching a particular item (s) and effectiveness by using WMS. We also aim to promote WMS to NYP, School of Business Management (SBM), and their acceptance of our implementation will be deeply appreciated by us.
-Guay Sze Min, System Team Project Manager
In my role, I had to oversee and take responsibility for the successful initiation, planning, execution and closure of a project.
I had satisfied the three needs which are task needs, team needs & individual needs.
Task needs are to meet the objectives of the project by defining, planning, controlling and monitoring to achieve excellent work quality.
Team needs are the important key which leads success in the project. Therefore, I appointed secondary leaders such as documentation, inputting and configuration team leaders to control and monitor closely with their own team’s tasks to meet the objectives. I had also set up regulations in my team in order to not delay the schedule of our deadline in the project.
Individual needs are to balance team and task needs such as to motivate my team members as well as helping team members’ personal problems.
Overall, I gave my best as a project manager and appreciate all my team members for their effort and excellent work performance to excel in SCMC.
International Trade Challenge
After the finals, the internet team went to ask the overall experiences that the FedEx team has for the whole competition.
“Although we didn’t win in the Finals, I was glad that we have done our best to get us this far. To lose or to win is part of a competition. However, I’m extremely delighted to experience a fruitful and challenging event such as this – FedEx ITC. Through the experience, I realised that being a good presenter is as vital as a good product invented for the challenge. Overall, I’ve indeed learnt a lot from inventing to marketing to presenting. It was a memorable experience and a great exposure for me. Last but not least, I would like to thank Miss Chee, Mr Fong and all the SCMC members in supporting us.”
– Hidayah.
A total of 3 teams from SCMC were sent to participate in
this competition. Out of which, a team has made it
through the finals. Both Hidayah and Prasiddha emerged
to be in the top 6, beating top schools like National University of Singapore,
Temasek Junior College, Raffles Junior College ! A total
of 47 entries were submitted and their victory to be
qualified in the final has made SBM feel proud of them.
They will continue to take up the tough fight this
Saturday, 11 July 2009, so as to be in the top 3 to
represent Singapore in the Asia Pacific. They have went a
long journey to make them reach this far. However, this
is just the beginning before competing with the rest of
the institutions and countries. Perseverance and
commitment are the keys to their success. Congrats to
both of them and wish them all the best for in the
FINALS. And, also special thanks to the rest of the 2
FedEx teams for putting in their effort to compete.
When asked about their experience and feeling after
making through in the top 6, here is what they have to say. “My experience for this event...well, I must say it’s an
experience that I would not trade for anything else. The
project was to create a new innovative product to be
marketed overseas with supporting evidence and
understandings of marketing strategies. We did attend a
workshop to have a gist of what we are expected to
deliver in the competition. The workshop was a fruitful
one as we were taught the various approach and
methods on marketing. I’m absolutely ecstatic that we
made it to the finals but I’ll be more delighted if we NYP
were to be shortlisted in the top 3.”
– Hidayah.
“To be persistent is what we have to go through as for
now. And working hard throughout the whole journey is
vital. FedEx has organized a great event that will unleash
the entrepreneurs within the participants. FedEx has
benefits us in many ways. And the fact that we made it
to the finals, really made me utterly contented. It was
unexpected! Moreover, the attractive prizes if we made
it to the top 3!”
– Prasiddha.
Our school's FedEx Team
Written By: Amanda Ng
The FedEx team of 12 NYP members spent 23/5, Saturday, attending the FedEx Junior Achievement, International Trade Challenge (ITC) workshop at ACJC.
The workshop focused on specific topics like product analysis, market research, survey and analysis, and market entry strategy.
Workshop Agenda
When we reached the lecture hall, we had to register ourselves at the booth.
We were each given a name-tag, a file containing notes for the workshop and goodies bag.
After registration, we had to complete an ice-breaker activity which required us to get to know people from other schools.
At 9.30am, the FedEx Managing Director, Mr Matt Davies, gave the introductory speech, followed by the introduction of the FedEx employees from the different departments.
The main speaker was Mr Rick Ross, a lecturer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. He introduced the objectives of the workshop to us, which is to develop a new product and devise ways to market it overseas, then proceeded on to explain about international trade.

Next, it was tea-break, where some light refreshments were provided. My classmates and I even had a photo-taking session with the FedEx staff.

The next topic covered was market research, survey and analysis.
It was similar to a marketing lecture in our own school, where we learnt the importance of its key research areas: business, demographic, advertising and competition, and marketing survey methods.
After the lunch hour was the sharing session by 2 of the finalist teams of last year’s competition.
It was interesting and insightful, and many of us gained an idea or two from them.
We then proceeded on to learning about market entry strategies, which include short/long term goals, target market, product pricing, distribution channels and marketing plan.
It was an important segment of the workshop as it comprised of many of the topics in the competition criteria.
Attentive Students
Lastly, we were required to do a final activity in groups of 6.
My classmates and I formed a group together, and we discussed about a product and its marketing strategies.
We had to complete a market entry strategy template, using facts from the country fact sheet provided.
In the last hour of the workshop, a few groups were selected to present their ideas to all the participants.
We were then briefed on the competition rules and guidelines, and the judging criteria of the project.
In the last ten minutes of the workshop, we had to drop our nametags in a box for a quick game of lucky draw.
We then filled in an evaluation form for the workshop before being dismissed.
I feel the teams are now better informed and just raring to go for the ITC trophy and prizes.
Good luck, fellow participants!
